Harpeth Hills

Betsy and Lauren designed this 9,000-square-foot custom home for a family in collaboration with renowned architect Amanda Orr and builder West Cook. The exterior, an elongated composition of Indiana limestone, fieldstone, slate roofing, and copper detailing, reads like a storybook cottage scaled up to contemporary proportions. The interiors reflect the same sense of timelessness through long corridors, classically scaled spaces, and an off-center floor plan that feels more like a modern cottage than a formal estate.

Rich materials were used with a subdued hand throughout so that the artisan quality would take center stage: lacquered paint, hand-textured marble, brass countertops, grasscloth, and silk wallcoverings were used throughout the home, and the Modern Remains team designed numerous architectural details.

The entry sets the tone immediately, with lacquered nineteenth-century pyramidal antique doors, tumbled marble flooring from Paris Ceramics, a sculptural gesso fixture by Alexander Lamont, and custom stained paneling that draws the eye up the staircase. The primary bedroom pairs a custom headboard with an Ironworks lantern and custom rug, while the living room's two canted, overscale lanterns and leather-wrapped cabinetry anchor multiple seating groups beneath the couple’s collected artwork.
