In the coveted neighborhood of Belle Meade in Nashville, Betsy and Lauren partnered with the award-winning firm Pfeffer Torode Architects on a 6,000-square-foot custom new build that takes its cues from the land itself, gently sloping down the site to keep its footprint modest from the street. Modern Remains was brought on for the interior architecture of the kitchen, bar, and primary bathroom, with the scope naturally expanding to include furnishings and styling.

Modern Remains designed the kitchen's plaster range hood, which became the project's most studied detail, a gentle slope set against a steep descent that took relentless attention to get the proportion exactly right. Nearby, Modern Remains designed a sliding backsplash, engineered with a local cabinetry builder and inspired by Mick De Giulio's signature detail, marking one of the first installations of its kind in a Nashville home. In the primary bathroom, a radial curved tub surround and ceiling in pecky cypress bring warmth against unlacquered brass plumbing, selected deliberately to age gracefully alongside the home.
